Spain has begun temporary border checks on travelers arriving from Italy by air and sea, in response to Italy’s own controls on arrivals from Spain. The checks include document verification at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante and Valencia. Italy implemented its controls after a surge of 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco. Despite Spain calling for Italy to lift its restrictions, both countries have maintained their measures. The temporary controls are set to last until Sept. 7 under the Schengen rules allowing for border checks in cases of public policy or security threats.
